Project Status

On December 16, 2005 the Hydros project received a letter stating that NASA will not fund the Hydros project through completion of the formulation phase. The Hydros project was requested to deliver a final report to NASA. It is anticipated that Hydros will be reproposed for a future flight opportunity.

Hydros Overview

Hydros was to provide the first global view of the Earth's changing soil moisture and surface freeze/thaw conditions, enabling new scientific studies of global change and atmospheric predictability, and making new hydrologic applications possible.

Hydros Was to Provide

Global maps of the primary land surface controls of processes that link the water, energy and biogeochemical cycles.

Land state initial and boundary conditions to improve the forecast skill of numerical weather predictions.

Information to advance critical hydrologic applications including flood and drought forecasting and wetland monitoring.

Past Meetings, News, and Highlights

Hydros Science Team Meeting: A meeting for Hydros science team members was held at NASA GSFC in Greenbelt, MD on October 25 - 27, 2005. The purpose of the meeting was to present algorithm progress, update error budget tables, discuss Level I and Level II requirements, and develop outlines and schedules for generation of ATBDs for each Hydros data product prior to PMSR/SRR in May, 2006.

Hydros Science Team Meeting: A Hydros science team meeting was held on May 2 - 4, 2005 in Phoenix, AZ. The major purpose of the meeting was to discuss roadmaps leading to the development of baseline and enhanced algorithms for Hydros products. This meeting was open to all interested persons in the scientific community. Thank you to everyone who attended.
